Milo Ventimiglia says Warner Bros. turned him down for new Batman film because he was 'too old'

Milo Ventigmiglia may have thought his role in Heroes as a sensitive and tortured bearer of superpowers would make him an obvious candidate to replace Ben Affleck as the Batman.

But Warner Bros., the studio producing the upcoming Robert Pattinson-led Batman film, deemed the 42-year-old This Is Us star too old for the part, according to an interview published Friday.

'Do I see myself in a cape and cowl? Warner Bros. didn’t,' he said during an appearance on Variety's Big Ticket podcast.

'They were looking for a new Batman and they said, "Ventimiglia, you’re too old,"' he added.

According to Milo, the discussions about taking over for The Caped Crusader took place only months ago, when he would have been 41.

By comparison, Ben Affleck, who is Milo's senior by four years, was 43 when Batman VSuperman: Dawn Of Justice introduced him to superhero fans.

Despite not getting one of the most lucrative roles in contemporary cinema, the Art Of Racing In The Rain actor didn't seem too torn up about it.

Doesn't add up: The alleged discussion happened months ago, when he was 41, and two years younger than Ben Affleck was when Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice was released; publicity still from Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice

'That’s OK, it doesn’t matter. I’m kind of busy, it’s OK,' he said.

The part ultimately went to 33-year-old Twilight star Robert Pattinson, who has focused on glowingly reviewed but under-seen films like High Life and Good Time in the wake of his massive Twilight success.

Milo also offered up Christian Bale (who was 31 when he first donned the cape) as the ultimate Batman.

'[He], I think, was a killer Batman, but also I think he was an incredible Bruce Wayne,' he said, adding that he saw the 'benefits of George Clooney, and Val Kilmer and Ben Affleck.'

Praise: 'Christian Bale, I think, was a killer Batman, but also I think he was an incredible Bruce Wayne,' said Milo, adding that he saw the strong qualities in the other actors who played him; still from The Dark Knight Rises

Though he missed out on a choice superhero part, now the Creed II actor is more interested in focusing on down-to-earth characters with real-life issues.

'The superhero world? Maybe I’m just playing real-life superheroes right now,' he said. 'Jack Pearson, Denny Swift. They’re real attainable superheroes, that are out there in the open representing good guys and good fathers.'

Milo's commitment to his role as Jack on This Is Us recently earned him his third Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series.

He also stars in the upcoming dramedy The Art Of Racing In The Rain, in which he plays a car salesman. He's joined in the movie by a dog (voiced by Kevin Costner) who tries to behave in the most humane and human-like way possible in hopes of being reincarnated as a human.

The Art Of Racing In The Rain hits theaters on Friday, August 9.
